Quick answer: Most full roof replacements in the U.S. cost about $5,700 to $16,000, according to HomeGuide. Angi puts the typical range at $5,903 to $13,378, and Fixr at $7,500 to $14,000. HomeGuide’s Texas range is $5,600 to $15,800. Asphalt shingles run about $3 to $6 per square foot installed. Metal and tile cost more. A new roof is one of the largest bills most Abilene homeowners will pay. Hail is a big part of why roofs here get replaced, and insurance often decides how much you pay out of pocket. This guide covers current price ranges, what raises a quote, Class 4 shingles, Texas insurance rules and Abilene permits.

Roof replacement cost by material
Roofers price by the “square.” One square covers 100 square feet of roof. HomeGuide puts a new roof at $300 to $600 per square on average, with labor at $150 to $300 per square. The table shows installed prices from three national cost guides.
| Material | Installed cost per sq ft | Typical whole roof | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3-tab asphalt shingles | $3 to $5 | $5,700 to $12,000 | HomeGuide |
| Architectural shingles | $4 to $6 | $7,500 to $16,000 | HomeGuide |
| Class 4 impact-resistant shingles | Up to about 20% more than standard asphalt shingles | Varies by brand and roof size | Fixr |
| Metal shingles | $6 to $14 | $9,000 to $35,000 | HomeGuide |
| Standing seam metal | $9 to $16 | $13,500 to $40,000 | HomeGuide |
| Metal (all types) | Not listed | $5,700 to $25,000 | Angi |
| Concrete tile | $7 to $19 | $10,500 to $47,500 | HomeGuide |
| Clay tile | $8 to $25 | $20,000 to $55,000 | HomeGuide |
| Tile (all types) | Not listed | $8,500 to $26,400 | Angi |
The guides do not always agree. Fixr, for example, lists architectural shingles at $8,000 to $32,000 for a roof of about 2,000 square feet. Use the ranges to judge whether a quote is in the normal zone, not to predict an exact price.
What drives the price
These are the main reasons two quotes differ.
- Roof size. More squares means more material and labor. It is the biggest single factor.
- Pitch and shape. Steep roofs need more safety gear and slow the crew down. Angi says an unusually steep pitch can add $1,000 to $3,000. Hips, valleys and dormers add flashing work.
- Tear-off and layers. HomeGuide puts shingle tear-off at $1 to $3 per square foot. Fixr says disposal can rise to $150 per square for multiple layers. Building codes generally do not allow a new layer over two existing layers.
- Decking. Rotted or damaged plywood shows up once the old roof is off. HomeGuide lists decking replacement at $2 to $5 per square foot. Ask how the quote handles it.
- Material. See the table above. Class 4 shingles, metal and tile all cost more than standard shingles.
- Ventilation. New or added roof vents cost $200 to $700, per HomeGuide. Good attic airflow matters in West Texas heat.
- Permit and dumpster. HomeGuide puts permits at $100 to $500 nationally. Debris haul-off may be a separate line or built into tear-off.
Hail and impact-resistant shingles in Abilene
Hail is a real risk here. Some recent and well-known events:
- March 10, 2026: A National Weather Service meteorologist in San Angelo told the Abilene Reporter-News the storm brought golf ball to baseball size hail, with 2.5-inch stones reported in Buffalo Gap.
- June 12, 2014: Baseball size hail hit Abilene. The Insurance Council of Texas predicted about $400 million in insured losses, as reported by Canadian Underwriter. The council also noted softball size hail on Easter Sunday 2011.

What Class 4 means
Impact-resistant shingles are tested under the UL 2218 standard. To earn Class 4, the top rating, a shingle must take a 2-inch steel ball dropped from 20 feet, twice in the same spot, without cracking. Fixr says Class 4 shingles cost up to 20% more than regular asphalt shingles.
Insurance discounts in Texas
The Texas Department of Insurance (TDI) says impact-resistant roofing may qualify for a premium discount, with Class 4 getting the highest credit. Each insurer sets its own discount amount and paperwork rules. The product label matters. Ask your roofer to complete TDI Form PC068 after the install, and send it to your agent. Call your insurer before you buy so you know what discount, if any, you would get.
Insurance claims in Texas
If hail or wind damaged your roof, your policy may pay part of the cost. Know these rules first.
- You must pay your deductible. Texas Insurance Code Chapter 707 requires it. TDI says it is illegal for a contractor to offer to waive, rebate or absorb your deductible. TDI notes violators face up to a $2,000 fine and six months in jail.
- Your roofer cannot be your adjuster. Under Insurance Code 4102.163, a roofer cannot act as a public adjuster on a claim for a home they are working on. Source: TDI, Roofing and insurance: Know the law.
- Wind and hail deductibles are often a percentage. TDI says to ask whether your wind and hail deductible differs from your other deductible. A percentage deductible is figured on the home’s insured value. In a TDI example, a 2% deductible on a $200,000 home is $4,000.
- Replacement cost vs. actual cash value. Replacement cost coverage pays to fix the roof at current prices. Actual cash value pays less as the roof ages. In TDI’s example, a $10,000 roof claim with a $4,000 deductible paid $0 on a 20-year-old roof under actual cash value. TDI also says some insurers switch older roofs to actual cash value at renewal.

Permits and checking a roofer
The City of Abilene FAQ says a building permit is required when replacing more than 5 squares (500 square feet) of roofing. The city registers contractors through its MyGov system. To see if a contractor is registered, the city says to check MyGov or call 325-676-6273. Ask the city’s building inspections office which credential a roofer needs and what inspections apply to your job.
Texas does not issue a state license for residential roofers. Our Texas roofing license guide explains what to check instead, such as insurance, a physical address and written warranties.

How to get accurate quotes
Step 1: Get at least three written quotes
Each one should list the number of squares, the shingle brand and line, and the tear-off plan.
Step 2: Ask how decking is priced
Get a per-sheet price for replacing bad plywood in writing. This is a common surprise charge once the old roof is off.
Step 3: Confirm what is included
Check for underlayment, drip edge, flashing, vents, ridge cap, permit and debris haul-off.
Step 4: Ask about Class 4 pricing
Ask each roofer to price standard and Class 4 shingles. Then ask your insurer what discount the Class 4 option would earn.
Step 5: Get warranties in writing
Ask for both the manufacturer warranty and the roofer’s workmanship warranty, with the length of each spelled out.
Storm chaser red flags
- A crew knocks on your door right after a storm and pushes you to sign that day.
- Someone offers to “cover,” waive or rebate your deductible. That is illegal in Texas.
- The roofer offers to negotiate your claim with your insurer. Texas law bars that.
- They want full payment up front. TDI advises holding final payment until the work is done.
- The contract has blank spaces, or the company has only out-of-town references.
- The bid is far higher or far lower than the others.
