Hiring a roofer after a Texas hailstorm

Texas does not license roofers, so after a storm almost anyone can knock on your door. These are the warning signs, and what to check instead.

Storm chaser red flags

  • ✓Offers to cover your deductible. Illegal in Texas (Bus. & Com. Code §27.02).
  • ✓Promises to handle or negotiate your claim. Contractors cannot act as your public adjuster.
  • ✓No local office, out-of-state plates, or a phone number that stops working after the storm.
  • ✓Not registered with your city or unwilling to pull a permit.
  • ✓Pressure to sign today, or a large deposit before materials arrive.

What to check before you hire

  • ✓City registration and permit. Call your city permits office to confirm both.
  • ✓A local address and a track record of reviews from your area.
  • ✓Proof of insurance: general liability, plus workers’ comp or an equivalent policy.
  • ✓A written contract listing materials, tear-off, decking repair, cleanup and price.
  • ✓Warranty terms in writing: the manufacturer warranty and the roofer’s workmanship warranty.

Report suspected violations to the Texas Attorney General at 800-621-0508. Questions about your policy: Texas Department of Insurance, 800-252-3439.

How a hail claim works in Texas

📷
1. Document and report
Photograph the damage, cover any openings to prevent more damage, and report the claim to your insurer promptly.
🔍
2. Get a local inspection
A local roofer can document the damage and be there when the adjuster visits. Your insurer decides what is covered.
📝
3. Sign a written contract
For insurance jobs of $1,000 or more, Texas requires a bold notice in the contract that you owe the deductible.
📄
4. Permit and inspection
Most cities require a permit for a full replacement. Your roofer should pull it before work starts.
💰
5. You pay the deductible
Your insurer can ask for proof that you paid it before releasing the final payment.
🛡
6. Keep the warranty
Get the manufacturer and workmanship warranty in writing, and keep it with your policy papers.

What a new roof costs in Texas

A typical West Texas shingle replacement runs about $8,000 to $15,000. These are installed price ranges per square foot, for planning only.

MaterialPer sq ft, installed
3-tab shingles$3.20 – $4.80
Architectural shingles$4.25 – $6.35
Class 4 impact-resistant shingles$5.40 – $8.65
Metal roofing$8.40 – $14.70

Class 4 impact-resistant shingles cost more but hold up better to hail, and many insurers offer a discount. Ask your agent.

How We Rank Roofers

Google Reviews
Ratings adjusted for review count, so a handful of five-star reviews cannot outrank hundreds.
📍
Local Office
A real street address in your area, not a storm-season phone number.

Taken from the company’s own site. Directory-only claims get half credit.
🏅
Manufacturer Credentials
Named programs such as GAF Master Elite or Owens Corning Preferred.
📋

Frequently asked questions

Do roofers need a license in Texas?

No. Texas has no statewide roofing license. Many cities, including Abilene, require roofers to register with the city and pull a permit for a roof replacement. The Roofing Contractors Association of Texas (RCAT) offers a voluntary certification, and shingle makers such as GAF and Owens Corning run their own contractor programs.

Can a roofer cover or waive my insurance deductible?

No. Texas Business and Commerce Code §27.02 makes it an offense for a contractor to waive, rebate or absorb your deductible. Your insurer can ask for proof that you paid it. Treat any offer to “take care of the deductible” as a red flag.

Can a roofer negotiate my insurance claim?

A roofer can inspect, document damage and meet your adjuster, but Texas Insurance Code §4102.163 bars a contractor from acting as your public adjuster or advertising that it will negotiate your claim. Only you or a licensed public adjuster can do that.

When is hail season in Texas?

In West and Central Texas, most hail falls from about March through June, with storms possible into summer. Have your roof inspected after any storm with hail, even if you cannot see damage from the ground.

How much does a new roof cost in Texas?

Most single-family replacements in West Texas run roughly $8,000 to $15,000 for asphalt shingles. Class 4 impact-resistant shingles and metal cost more. Your price depends on roof size, pitch, tear-off layers and decking repairs, so get at least two written quotes.
